Dike-Newell Kindergarten and First Grade students enjoyed a wonderful orchestra experience with the Portland Symphony Orchestra this past week. Thank you Mrs. Gallant for organizing this not only for our students, but for students across the region! Also thank you to Morse High School for hosting at the Montgomery Theater. We had a wonderful time!

Many thanks to Jenny Byrnes who came in to share her expertise and offer a Cookie Decorating Club for first grade library club students. Six students from each class attended the club and decorated cookies to bring back and share with the rest of the class. In addition to sharing her decorating tips, Ms. Jenny talked about how baking is both a creative art and a science and a great activity to help students with both skills.

Second grade Library Acting Club students from Ms. Michaud's class performed their reader's theater play Rumpelstiltskin for first grade classes. Ms. Hardman hopes the hardworking actors will continue with their theater endeavors.

Family Fun Night is still on for tonight! We hope to see you there!

Dike-Newell 2nd Graders Graduate from the LEAD Program
Second Graders Graduate from LEAD Program
On Tuesday, second graders in RSU 1 celebrated their graduation from the Law Enforcement Against Drugs (LEAD) program. This ten-week program, which meets for forty minutes each week, focuses on teaching students how to reduce risks and build resilience by developing important skills like goal setting, decision making, and conflict resolution.
Deputy Chief Michelle Small, Corporal Nick Green, and Officer Brett McIntire attended the ceremony to honor the students’ achievements. Each graduate received a diploma and a LEAD T-shirt as recognition for their hard work.
As part of the program, students wrote essays reflecting on what they learned during their time in LEAD. Teachers selected one student from each class to receive an award for the best overall essay. Additionally, a trophy was awarded to the class that completed the most homework assignments over the ten weeks. Congratulations to Mrs. Brown’s class for earning this honor!
The LEAD program continues to serve as a meaningful partnership between local law enforcement and schools, helping young students develop lifelong skills

Thanks to the generosity of donors at Donors Choose, the Dike Newell Library recently received two sets of Giant Safe & Soft Dinosaurs from Lakeshore Learning. Ms. Deci's kindergarten class participated in Dinosaur Club this week, the other three classes will be participating in the next couple of weeks.
In addition to providing time for creative play with the new dinosaurs, Librarian Ms. Hardman read What Are Dinosaurs? by Bobbie Kalman and showed students how to access dinosaur information on PebbleGo and Epic. Time was also provided to browse dinosaur books, color a dinosaur picture, and to do a Jurassic Winter Challenge movement break.

Pre-K students recently were fortunate enough to have two guest readers during their weekly school library visit. Dike Newell Administrative Assistant Katie Walker and RSU 1 Tech Support Specialist Jake Rothwell visited the class and shared winter and holiday stories with them. Katie's son Cohen and Jake's daughter Matilda, both who are Pre-K students, were happy to assist their parents with their presentation.

Dike Newell students have been participating in Hour of Code during library classes this week as well as having a special library visit to practice programming Bee-Bots. Hour of Code is a free introduction to computer science through fun activities and videos for learners of all skill levels. Schools around the world join the Hour of Code movement as part of Computer Science Education Week.
DNS students used PebbleGo to read about computer programming and coding and searched Epic to see how many books about coding were available. They read Coding Confusion by Kirsty Holmes and translated their names into binary code language. Students previewed two of the many activities available on the Hour of Code website and learned how they could access this site at school as well as at home. Normally we would read How to Code a Sandcastle and How to Code a Rollercoaster by Josh Funke, but he is our visiting author this year, so those books will be read closer to his visit in May.
During the special Bee-Bot library visit, Ms. Hardman, with the help of second grade Coding Club members, taught students how to program the Bee-Bots. They then visited various stations for Bee-Bot challenges.

Dike Newell School second grade students will have the opportunity to participate in Coding Club this year. Under the direction of Student Information Systems Manager Matt Frey-Davis and DNS Librarian Lisa Hardman, students will be introduced to basic coding concepts through the use of Bee-Bot robots. They will then use these newfound skills to assist kindergarten and first grade students during Hour of Code in December

Bath Tech student, Henry Putman, built a new Buddy Bench for the students at Dike-Newell School. A Buddy Bench is a designated seat in a school playground where students can go if they want to play with someone or talk to someone. Thank you for supporting our DNS students, Henry!

Today we had our October community meeting. We learned about "citizenship" and how to be good citizens in our school hallways. We had fun dancing along to "I've got a new way to walk" and celebrated the return of the Principal's Club, beginning next Monday!
What is Principal's Club? Mystery staff members will have bee cards each day, and will be watching for students who are setting a great example with safe, kind, responsible behavior at school to give a card to. Students who receive a bee card come to the office at the end of the day to celebrate by signing the celebrity book, selecting a small prize, and putting their name on the 100s chart. When we fill the 100 chart, we will have a whole-school celebration!
Have a great weekend DNS citizens! If you want to check out the silly song we danced to, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-7ZJjLy5D8

Date: Monday, November 4th
Time: 6:00-7:00pm
Location: Montgomery Auditorium, Morse High School/Bath Tech
RSU1 and the Sagadahoc Sheriff's Office have partnered together to invite parents, guardians, and caregivers to an Internet Safety Night. Come learn how to talk to students about what they see on the internet, as well as ways they can avoid being victimized on the internet. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, a local affiliate of Maine State Police Computer Crimes, has been working with RSU1 to share internet safety presentations to its students. These presentations cover privacy and security on the internet, good citizenship, and social media use. This new presentation is designed for adults trying to guide and safeguard their students online.

Second grade Library Acting Club students from Ms. Henrikson's class recently performed their play "Little Red Riding Hood" for pre-k and first grade students. First grade has been comparing and contrasting multiple versions of this story and greatly enjoyed seeing it brought to life. Many thanks to the actors for their hard work and missed recesses.

Second grade students have been learning about trickster tales during their weekly library classes. Trickster tales are found in all parts of the world and often feature a smaller animal who, using cunning and wit, outsmarts a stronger animal. These stories can be humorous and have been passed down for generations.
After hearing a wide array of stories, students used handheld maps to locate the setting for each of the stories. They also discovered that the PebbleGo website has a multitude of information on countries and cultures. So far we have read the following titles retold and illustrated by Gerald McDermott:
Coyote (American Southwest)
Djibouti (Amazon Rainforest)
Monkey (India)
Parrot
Pig Boy (Hawaii)
Raven (Pacific Northwest)
Zomo (Africa)
Many thanks to the donors at Donors Choose who provide the books, maps and globes for this lesson.
